Grider Hill Dock was a dream in 1950 when Bruce Sloan had the foresight to choose and win the most desirable concession on Lake Cumberland in the bid process from the U.S. Corps of Engineers.
Bruce Sloan was a visionary, sportsman and businessman in the stone and timber trade. His intention from the beginning was to build a Marina/Resort that would be more than a "fishing camp". His plan was to develop all facilities (lodge, restaurant and cottages as close to the water's edge and docks as possible) within walking distance of each other.
Inspired from reading and admiring the architectural methods of Frank Lloyd Wright, Bruce Sloan designed and built Indian Creek Lodge using native stone and wood, mined and cut from his own land. Tucked in amongst the trees at the water's edge, the lodge and restaurant offers a panoramic view of Lake Cumberland's pristine water and mountain sides of
vast undisturbed forest land.
Grider Hill Dock opened to serve the public in the spring of 1951 under the leadership and management of Bruce and Gay Sloan. Their sons (Tony, Ned and Brucie) joined in to help. The marina remained under the same ownership until January 5th, 2007 when St. Thomas Glen Resorts, LLC purchased Grider Hill Dock from the Sloan family after over 50 years of ownership. St. Thomas Glen Resorts, LLC and the fantastic staff at the marina are dedicated to continuing the great customer service tradition as well as preserving the historic atmosphere that Grider Hill Dock is known for.
Over a half century of time has verified Bruce Sloan's dream to be true. Boating, fishing and all types of water sports have had enormous growth with our country's prosperity. This section of Lake Cumberland has become the most popular destination on the lake because Grider Hill Dock is located on the most scenic part of Lake Cumberland, just four miles upstream from the dam and five miles downstream of the cascading 76 Falls.
